Automated Lug Nut Fastening
“This application is impossible to automate unless the robot can reliably and repeatably locate the [position of the] nuts,” said Shelley Fellows, Vice-President Operations for Radix Controls Inc.

The innovative application uses two Cognex In-Sight® 5403 vision systems and relies on unique PatMax® pattern matching technology from Cognex to quickly locate the wheel in the image.

PatMax can be programmed to recognize any pattern simply by highlighting the pattern in an image taken by the camera. Plant personnel can easily configure the system to recognize the many wheel types manufactured at this site.

The productiong control system communicates with the vision system to let it know which type of wheel will be on the next vehicle and the vision system confirms the type before loading the appropriate program.
Best Practice Vision Tip: PC or no PC?
Each manufacturing environment has unique requirements for integrating machine vision into their factory automation processes. In one example, they must decide how much access to the vision system setup should be provided to operators and how to allow this access.

Cognex In-Sight vision systems offer the VisionView operator display to address such concerns. This low-cost solution is a perfect accessory to enhance any In-Sight vision system solution.

VisionView can be configured in a number of ways and can allow operators to perform the
following tasks:
  • Display images with overlay graphics from up to nine Cognex vision systems,
  • Offer image adjustment with focus and image zoom and pan functionality,
  • Take the system online/offline, modify tolerances, retrain patterns, modify regions and change jobs,
  • Automatically save failed images to a storage device or network location, and
  • Display pass/fail status, results and statistics to quickly spot shifts in trends.

With the latest release, VisionView 1.2 is available in two platforms:
    1. A networked industrial-grade panel with plug-and-go setup and a seven-inch touch-screen.
    2. A PC-based software version that allows the plant the flexibility to use existing PCs
      and larger monitors.
Both versions provide unmatched operator control necessary to accommodate any level of machine vision expertise. Learn more about VisionView 1.2 from our podcast (transcript also available).
