Do your applications require traditional or nontraditional acquisition sources? Does your software support all possibilities?
 |
Vision software allows you to use any acquisition source chosen from two categories: frame grabbers and direct connect cameras. This flexibility allows you to experiment with many options to find the best solution for your challenge.
Frame Grabbers Analog frame grabbers established the standard for machine vision and are still frequently used. They are especially powerful in rough environments such as robotic welding.
Camera Link is designed for the highest throughput rate which can be up to 1 GB of image data per second. This is the best choice for line scan applications.

Direct Connect Cameras Direct connect cameras attach directly to any PC that have GigE, FireWire or USB ports.
There are many options among direct connect cameras. Their acquisition bandwidth ranges from 20 to 100 MB per second, meeting most application requirements. But for more demanding applications where speed and resolution requires 16 megapixel cameras or 12k Line Scan cameras, Camera Link is the better choice.
Cameras typically turn light in grey values but there are some special cameras that create pixel values that do not reflect light intensity.

Thermal Cameras These non-traditional cameras turn absolute thermal values into pixels. In many processes, the temperature can help determine good parts from bad. The example to the left shows a yellow color as a result of too little material in the molding process.
3D Profilers When certain defects or features cannot be detected with standard CCD cameras, 3D laser profilers provide the depth of an object in Z-direction. The example to the left shows a break pad with three defects that would not be visible to conventional cameras.
X-ray Imagers By looking through objects with x-ray imagers, one can easily locate alien material or defects. The gray levels indicate the density of the object. The image to the left shows how a single thread of a cable is outside the expected area of the already sealed connector, undetectable with traditional image technology.
