Traceability for Printed Circuit Boards
An electronics manufacturer needed to read 2D labels and laser etched codes on printed circuit boards. The codes are scanned automatically as the board moves down the production line and the data is automatically transferred directly into their MRP system.
The most critical requirement for this process is a high read rate. The codes are read 4-8 times during production and if a code cannot be read then the automated line will stop until an operator removes the product from the line. Such downtime is costly. For this, the company installed Cognex DataMan® 100X fixed-mount industrial ID reader which uses patented IDMax® technology to provide the highest read rate for 2D Data Matrix codes. Benefits: the real-time inventory tracking system to track everything from raw components to finished goods enables the company to dramatically reduce inventory costs and product recall situations.

Connector Inspection - JST Corp., USA
JST makes over 30,000 different types of connectors. In the past, the company performed manual inspection, continually checking parts and losing $1,500 while investigating each nonconformance. Recently, JST was able to improve on its quality by implementing Cognex In-Sight® vision system that measures parts to an accuracy of 0.1 mm, better than could be achieved in the past with a human inspector. In-Sight® also identifies variations much faster than human inspectors, making it possible to adjust machine parameters quickly enough to avoid defects. Benefits: the number of nonconformances in the latest measurement period was reduced to 0 parts per million, well below the extremely tough six-sigma quality benchmark of 3.4 parts per million and the cost of a nonconformance report has been reduced from $1,500 to $100 per incident.

Surface-Mount Device (SMD) Placement
To be successful in today’s surface-mount technology (SMT) assembly market, SMD manufacturers must provide their customers with high quality products that also offer excellent price performance.
Machine vision plays a critical role by offering advanced software capable of locating PCB fiducial marks and devices for alignment, and inspecting tolerance inspection on devices.
Cognex vision software provides patented PatMax® technology to give SMD mounters the ability to: - Locate PCB fiducial marks under wide range
of conditions, - Locate non-standard devices,
- Locate and inspect fine pitch BGA, CSP, and Flip Chip Devices,
- Automate tools for creating device descriptions,
- Support a wide range of camera types, and
- Provide an open software
development environment.
When evaluating machine vision systems and software for SMD placement guidance, look for a system capable of increasing alignment yield, throughput and productivity, and one that is flexible enough to meet the demanding conditions in today's SMT assembly market. By considering these objectives, you can handle new component types and device variability across manufacturers, while simplifying the demands on the users.
