Solar Cell Production: Find Defects Before it's too Late - Würth Solar GmbH (Germany) has been producing solar modules using CIS technology since October 2006. The current production yield is at 90% and rising.  Manufacturing printed circuit boards (PCBs) on glass substrates is a difficult job. These CIS coating pioneers were world leaders in developing solar modules with dimensions of 1200 mm x 600 mm at their Marbach pilot installation back in 2000.  To reduce cost and optimise product quality, the company implemented data tracking using In-Sight ID readers . With this, Data Matrix codes applied to glass plates are used to identify each plate and ensure that it has been processed correctly. Tracking plates with this allows the company to detect defects and determine if the module will function properly. Read further

Solar Solutions — from Wafers to Panels

Cognex helps solar industry leaders deliver maximum output and profit from each production line with solutions for discrete manufacturing platforms in wafer and glass processing, as well as for continuous roll-to-roll platforms for flexible substrates.

Some application examples include:
  • aligning wafers for printing or laser edge isolation,
  • detecting edge defects,
  • checking fingers for continuity and coatings for color uniformity,
  • measuring finger print width and bus bar position,
  • photovoltaic module and panel assembly verification, and
  • tracking panels through production.
