Manufacturing higher quality razor blades while reducing cost
When German manufacturer, Feintechnik GmbH, needed to identify defective razor parts, they collaborated with trusted partner, SmartVision, to develop an inspection system to ensure product quality—at a speed of up to 1.5 million individual parts per day. A production facility for triple-bladed razor heads has been equipped with ten Cognex In-Sight® vision systems to detect every potential defect. Four inspection stations scrutinize 13 individual parts that are combined to form the razor blade units. The new system ensures quality with 100% automated in-line inspection and verifies assembly, which eliminates defects and reduces scrap while lowering overall manufacturing costs.

Using a vision-guided robot to reduce costs by 40%

The Piston Group builds automotive cooling modules on five different assembly lines, each line building more than 50 different variants in sequence to the customers’ demands. To replace a complex and costly inspection process, The Piston Group developed an affordable and flexible solution by mounting a single Cognex In-Sight 5603 vision system on a Fanuc® robot. The robot moves the vision system into position to capture 30+ images in less than 45 seconds, completely inspecting each module. The new inspection system has substantially improved quality by inspecting more points at a higher level of accuracy while reducing initial investment by 40% and retool costs by 80%.

Image-based industrial ID reader saves hundreds of thousands of dollars
An electronics manufacturer produces thousands of different part numbers of electronic products intermixed on the same assembly line. The difficulty in identifying parts, combined with the fast pace of the line, resulted in a large amount of rework or scrap. The manufacturer had experienced several hundred thousands of dollars a year in losses when incorrect parts were added to, and/or the wrong operations were performed, on assemblies. Claire Lasers worked with the manufacturer and developed an application using the DataMan® 100 ID Reader. “I picked the Cognex DataMan 100 ID reader … because … its software consistently delivers reliable readings even when the appearance of the code has been degraded,” said Denis J. Gendron, President of Claire Lasers.
