Achieving Higher Read Rates in Tough Conditions
The Challenge: No reader could keep pace with the high speed line
The Challenge: No reader could keep pace with the high speed line
Cisco-Eagle worked with Goody Goody Liquors in Texas to develop a system that automatically applies required tax stamps with 1-D barcodes as well as reads the barcode for verification, tracking, and auditing.

The bottles are processed at the rate of one per second and have different shapes and sizes. The labels also have different backgrounds and varying positions. In addition, changes in ambient lighting add more challenges.

With the first reader that Cisco-Eagle tried, they were only able to achieve around 95% accuracy (one failed read every 20 seconds). The engineers tried another reader but had difficulty integrating it with the line's Rockwell ControlLogix programmable logic controller (PLC) and received very little help from the reader's manufacturer.
The Solution: DataMan 500 powered by VSoC
When Cisco-Eagle tried the DataMan® 500 barcode reader it was rarely unable to read a barcode. Additionally, the reader easily communicates to the PLC using Rockwell’s EtherNet/IP protocol.

“We decided to go with the DataMan 500 because it has a larger depth of field, higher resolution, and decoding technology [powered by proprietary VSoC technology] that made it possible to reliably read the barcodes in spite of the challenges of this application,” said Sam Chen of Cisco-Eagle.

Cognex VSoC™ (vision system on a chip) combines imager and processor onto a single piece of silicon. The resulting barcode reader dramatically increases decode speeds and frame rates over conventional image-based systems, reducing both downtime and changeover time.
The Solution: DataMan 500 powered by VSoC
The Result: Saving time saves money
“Cognex customer support is remarkable,” said Chen. “They worked with us continuously to make this application a success ... the barcode reader played a major role in the success of this application which saves a huge amount of time that was previously spent applying labels, manually scanning labels, and inputting the tax stamp information. The customer is very happy with the performance of the system and we have not received a single service call on the barcode reader.”
